Lā Honua 2025
Saturday, April 19 | Onomea Scenic Route | Hāmākua Heritage Coast, Hawai‘i Island
The Lā Honua Earth Day Festival is an annual celebration hosted by Project Kanu, dedicated to uplifting regenerative agriculture, sustainability, and Hawaiian cultural values. Rooted in our mission to support underrepresented growers and foster resilient, sustainable food systems, this event brings together farmers, educators, cultural practitioners, and community members to honor the land (ʻāina) and our collective responsibility to care for it (mālama).

2025 Theme: Niu – The Tree of Life
This year, our festival will center around Niu, the Tree of Life, celebrating the coconut as a symbol of resilience, sustainability, and cultural significance in Hawai‘i and across the Pacific. Through this theme, we will explore the many uses of coconut while highlighting its role in agroforestry, climate resilience, and food sovereignty and ways to safeguard against the growing threat of the CRB.
History & Growth of the Festival
What started as a small roadside plant giveaway for the Pepeʻekeo community in 2021 has grown into a highly anticipated annual event that brings together the community to celebrate the intersection of sustainability, culture, and community. Over the years, we have expanded to include hands-on workshops, sustainability showcases, cultural demonstrations, and keiki activities, creating an immersive experience that inspires action and deepens connections to the natural world.
2025 Expansion:
This years festival will move from the Onomea Hub gardens where we had it last year across the road to the Pepeekeo Park located on the Onomea Scenic Route, just 20 minutes North of Hilo. We are incorporating a makeke (market of vendors), more fun activities for the ʻohana and live entertainment!
